Top tips for young people aspiring to be a franchise owner

I started my journey at Newcastle University where I read Agricultural Business Management. During my second year and like many young people, I wasn’t sure on what path I wanted to take post-university, so I researched brands I was interested in. Subway kept popping up – it was a place I had frequented during school, so I knew it well.

My family is in farming, but I didn’t feel this was the right career path for me. With the business studies knowledge I had gained at university and my passion for the brand, a Subway franchise felt like the perfect career.

I returned home to Bath to meet with my local Subway Business Development Agent and it seemed to click between us. I loved that it was high-profile franchised business with a proven system, which had worked for many years.

I acquired my first store in Bath shortly after I graduated and have loved it ever since!

My top tips for other young people looking into becoming a franchise owner are:

  1. Follow the training and guidance offered

I am lucky to work with a mature brand with a wealth of experience across the board. By taking on all of the training and guidance offered by the franchise you are opening yourself up for success and you’ll always benefit from the support of others to run your business to its full potential.

  2. Participate in company-sponsored marketing campaigns

Don’t think that work is only when you are in store or in the office, get out and speak to other local businesses and see how you can team up and benefit one another. This will also create great ways to get people talking about your franchise and the brilliant products you have on offer as well.

  3. Do your due diligence

Don’t be afraid to speak to other franchise owners who are on the frontline and know everything about the business – you can learn from others’ experience, especially in the early days when you are just starting out. Ask lots of questions, it’s the best way to learn.

  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Carrying on from point three, don’t be afraid of asking the wrong questions and do seek support when you need it. The great thing about being a franchise owner is you are never on your own. I’m always happy to answer calls or emails for anyone wanting to find out more.

Perhaps becoming a franchise owner is the right path for you too, if so good luck and enjoy the journey!
