Denny’s to open first UK franchise on Christmas Day – but only for the homeless

Few franchises have made as much of a mark on American culture as Denny’s. Over the past 60 years the diner chain has served up uncountable pancakes, rashers of bacon and cups of coffee. Soon Britons will be able to enjoy the same treats when the company expands into the UK – although when the first restaurant opens its doors in Swansea on Christmas Day it will only be for the homeless.

Announcing the news on its Instagram account, Denny’s UK said: “We are opening our doors on Christmas Day but strictly for the homeless people in Swansea. We’ll provide a hot breakfast and a place where they can feel welcome, to those who need it most. From past experience, we’ve seen how serving a hot meal can have a positive impact for a homeless person. We have also teamed up with Nation Radio to collect donations of everyday essentials like gloves, socks and soap. We’re packing them into rucksacks to distribute to homeless people on Christmas Day.”

Fortunately, more people will soon get the same service as Denny’s plans to roll out ten more restaurants over the next few years as a precursor to further growth in Europe. Leading the UK expansion is the experienced franchisee Leon Esfahani. And given his considerable franchising experience already includes running both Starbucks and Pizza Hut restaurants, it’s safe to say that he’s more than ready to sink his teeth into this challenge.

Commenting on the expansion, Esfahani said: “I have long been a fan of the Denny’s brand and am honoured to bring what I view as a truly unique concept to the United Kingdom. Denny’s serves up a welcoming atmosphere paired with a broad menu of favourites across all day parts and I am thrilled to introduce the Denny’s diner experience to the local community.”

While we are absolutely thrilled to soon be able to enjoy the same snacks that have become famous across the pond, we can only applaud Denny’s commitment to spreading Christmas cheer to those that need it the most.
