Smashburger lands in the UK

American burger chain Smashburger eyes 35 restaurants in the UK as part of its continued growth overseas

Smashburger lands in the UK

It seems the gourmet burger trend is here to stay. The nation still has a hankering for a humble patty and it’s now time to tuck into a Smashburger as the chain plans to expand across the pond.

This newcomer to Blighty is certainly one to watch. Founded in 2007, Smashburger now has 315 restaurants and is smashing its way across the globe with chains in the United States, Kuwait, Canada, El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica and Saudi Arabia. And it now has its sights set on opening two restaurants on British soil by the end of 2015 and a total of 35 eateries over several years.

“The United Kingdom is hungry for better burgers and presents a significant opportunity for us to meet the global demand in the category,” said Scott Crane, CEO of Smashburger.”

Its restaurants will offer up a variety of gourmet burgers smashed in a unique way on a buttered grill to lock in the juices. And in true gourmet burger fashion, the innovative menu does not fall short on creative toppings. It also offers unique milkshakes and craft beer, a staple of all American-style restaurants nowadays.

Smashburger’s expansion into the UK will be led by Tim Lowther, managing director of MSG Group, whose 30 years of experience in the fast casual industry makes him quite the burger boffin. The chain will follow in the footsteps of fellow US burger chains, Shake Shack and Five Guys, which have also set up shop on these shores in recent years.

“The fast casual dining market has yet to reach its potential in the United Kingdom and there is a huge opportunity for brands such as Smashburger,” said Lowther. “Due to its focus on quality and taste, we are certain Smashburger will be a success and more importantly satisfy the burger appetite for the next 30 years and beyond.”

Some may say there are too many burger bars popping up on our streets but the nation’s burger lovers – us included – couldn’t be more excited about Smashburger’s arrival.” /></p>
