Make a fresh start with franchising

Rebecca Newenham, a seasoned entrepreneur and franchise consultant, shares what to consider if you are thinking about self-employment and why franchising could provide the perfect solution

Make a fresh start with franchising

The first six months of 2025 have flown by, and we are already halfway through the year. Is it panning out as you hoped? Are you on track to achieve everything you want? If not, now might be the perfect time to take the leap and work for yourself by buying a franchise.

Why choose to work for yourself?

There are many great reasons to start your own business. For many people, it’s about flexibility. Being tied down to a nine-to-five schedule or a certain number of days in the office might not work for you. You might want to enjoy more time with children or have caring responsibilities for family members. Or desire more time for hobbies and interests – there’s more to life than work!

Values are another common reason people want to start their own venture. You might love your job or your industry, but not the values your current employer embodies. Independence offers more opportunities to share your skills in a way that feels right to you.

Other people simply love a challenge! Working for yourself is full of challenges, but the knowledge that you are behind every one of your business’s achievements is exceptionally satisfying. If you’re stuck in a rut and not bringing your best self to work every day, it may be time to do things differently.

What will you need to get started?

If you are thinking about making a fresh start in business, there are some core things you will need to cover:

  • Budget: Begin by determining your budget. Consider business costs and personal expenses. Review your monthly outgoings, such as mortgage repayments and car finance, and calculate what you need to earn to cover them.
  • Business plan: Essential for every successful business, your business plan outlines what you offer and how you plan to grow. It’s an important document – you will need to present it to the bank when applying for a business loan. And if you want to connect with investors or form a partnership, the other parties involved will also want to see it.
  • Registration for Self-Assessment or as a Limited Company: You will need to decide the best tax status for your business and register for Self-Assessment or as a Limited Company. This will ensure that you pay the correct tax on the amount your business earns.
  • Record-keeping: Businesses need to accurately record their income and expenditure, as well as customer and client information and details of products and services. You will also need to provide financial records to HMRC, so these must be accurate and readily accessible. It is worth getting some advice on this upfront so that you don’t end up having to trawl through receipts and documents when it comes to your tax return.
  • Outsourcing: If you love the idea of starting your own business but are worried about managing financial records, taxes, invoicing, or the lack of an IT helpdesk, you’re not alone. The good news is that you can outsource almost anything you don’t know how to do yourself. From finance, tax, and administration to writing business plans, creating websites, managing social media, and more, you can find people with the skills you need to help you establish and grow your business.
  • Support: Every business needs support, especially a new business! Fortunately, there is loads of support out there. From online guides to writing business plans to plain English guides to registering your business, any new entrepreneur can find what they need to get started on the UK government website.

Getting the right support is crucial, especially when you take your first few steps into business. Networking events can be a great way to connect with your local business community and find people who can offer assistance. Many of them have been in your shoes and will be more than happy to signpost you to experts in their network and provide support.

Franchising could offer the perfect solution

The right franchise could offer exactly the fresh start you have been looking for: the opportunity to do something for yourself in a way that works for you, but with the support of a franchisor. Buying a franchise means buying a proven business model. You don’t need to start from scratch. Your franchise handbook should contain everything you need to run your business. Then, you get to deliver it your way, on your terms.

I often talk about franchising as going into business for yourself, but not by yourself. It can offer the best of both worlds – all the flexibility, fulfilment, and empowerment of running your own enterprise, but with a safety net around you and a cheerleader (or team of cheerleaders!) by your side. All you have to do is find the right franchise and make it happen.
