The franchise pack mentality

There is something truly special about gathering with like-minded people who share your goals and passions

There is something truly special about gathering with like-minded people who share your goals and passions.

Conferences and networking events are not just about presentations and note-taking – they are about making connections, exchanging ideas and inspiring one another to reach new heights. They are also a chance to reflect on why we do what we do and to remember that we are stronger when we work together.

That sense of togetherness was on full display at this year’s Petpals annual franchisee conference. Here, Kevin Thackrah, Director of Petpals, shares his reflections on an incredible day that united the network to inspire growth and success for the year ahead.

Held at the Leonardo Hotel in Hinckley, the conference’s theme – Inspiring Growth & Success – set the tone perfectly. From the moment the doors opened, the atmosphere was buzzing. Franchisees greeted one another with enthusiasm, catching up on each other’s lives, swapping stories and exchanging tips. It was a vivid reminder of the unique camaraderie that makes being part of the Petpals family so special.

We kicked things off with an inspiring keynote from Berkeley Harris, a former Royal Marine turned global trainer in sales, management and leadership. His practical advice and high-energy delivery set the stage perfectly for what was to come.

From there, the day unfolded with a series of insightful speakers and workshops, all designed to help franchisees strengthen and grow their businesses. Franchisee Phil Till shared expert advice on expanding services for small pets, while Clinical Animal Behaviourist Claire Arrowsmith offered invaluable tips for managing tricky pet behaviours. Trevor Cooper, the nation’s go-to expert on dog law, gave a comprehensive overview of legal matters, and Sophie Bell, a vet and pet first aid guru, led a practical session on keeping pets healthy and safe.

One session that stood out was led by David Gray of Petpals Darlington. He explored innovative strategies to tap into the growing demand for cat care, a service that has seen a surge in demand thanks to the rise in cat ownership. David also walked franchisees through the legal changes expected in 2025, ensuring everyone felt prepared to navigate the shifting landscape with confidence.

Changes in legislation, like the recent updates to dog ownership laws, can sometimes feel overwhelming. But within the Petpals network, no one faces these challenges alone. Solutions and insights shared by one franchisee quickly become best practices for the whole group – turning potential hurdles into opportunities for growth.

Of course, it was not all about business. A highlight of the day was celebrating the achievements of franchisees who have gone above and beyond. Awards were handed out to recognise their hard work, dedication and positive impact in their communities. These moments of recognition are what truly reflect the heart and soul of Petpals – it is not just a business; it is a family.

For us at Petpals, camaraderie is everything. That sense of community is what motivates, inspires and supports our franchisees through every stage of their journey. Thriving becomes so much easier when you know your pack has your back.

Looking back, this year’s conference perfectly captured what makes Petpals so unique. The shared ambition, unwavering support and palpable passion in the room were incredible. As we step into 2025, it is clear we are moving forward with a renewed sense of momentum and excitement.

At the end of the day, it is all about working together to provide the best care for pets and their owners. And after this year’s conference, I am more confident than ever that we are ready to take on whatever comes our way.
