Leading mobile coffee brand Cafe2U make pledge to significantly reduce their carbon footprint over the next five years.
The UK’s premier mobile coffee franchise Cafe2U are set to become carbon neutral by the year 2026. Over the next five years, the Leeds-based business will be upgrading its fleet of almost 100 vehicles to electric. The company estimate that this will save approximately 12,650g of CO2 per annum.
And the first of Cafe2U‘s emission free vehicles was rolled out earlier this week to celebrate the start of Green Coffee Fortnight which began on Monday, September 27th. This annual event promotes environmentally friendly practices in the coffee industry.
With Cafe2U‘s famous red vans now turning ‘green’ this will mean the company’s entire fleet will have switched over to electric long before the Government’s ban on petrol and diesel vehicles come into effect in 2030. At present, the company’s fleet run on diesel. This move to become totally electric will have the added bonus of giving Cafe2U vans access to indoor arenas and emission-free areas.
Martyn Ward, the company’s chief executive, said: “Reducing our carbon footprint is absolutely vital to us and our customers. Therefore, we are always on the lookout for new ways to become even more sustainable. We are delighted to be leading the way in the mobile coffee market with our new zero emissions coffee vans, which I believe are a world first.
“As well as being better for the environment, electric vehicles will enable our franchisees to access indoor events and emission-free zones. To be the world’s first is testament to the progressive nature of our brand. It is also down to the hard work that our head office staff and franchisees put in each and every day.”
To coincide with the unveiling of its first electric van, the company is also launching a compostable paper cup. This will minimise Cafe2U‘s paper usage and further reduce its carbon footprint.
At some stage next year, the company’s head office in Aberford Road, Garforth, will have digitised all of their files and therefore be completely paper-free. The company’s pledge to become totally green means they have already switched from print to digital advertising, while also launching a new app to replace its loyalty card system.
Martyn Ward added: Cafe2Uhas introduced several other sustainability initiatives in recent years. In 2018 we launched a recycling scheme to process waste coffee, and replace plastic straws with paper alternatives. The following year we replaced diesel generators in our vans with emission-free lithium-ion batteries. We will never stop seeking greener alternatives.”
