I’m sure many of us franchisors value online discovery days, and we enjoy franchising or industry-specific online meetings. But seeing people face to face is worth so much more.
I’m the London regional chair for EWIF and love running the London regional meetings. Due to a change of venue taking a while to materialise, we had to run a few online sessions. They were well attended, and we were able to welcome guests from all over the UK.
However, having our first in-person meeting in a while, courtesy of NatWest, reminded me just how special it is to be together. We laughed, we shared, we supported one another, and we discussed so many topics where everyone could see each other. No cameras were turned off, and conversations even carried on over lunch afterwards.
Being in a relaxed environment opens up transparency and authenticity too, in my opinion. Screens can feel very formal, and it’s often awkward reminding someone they’re on mute (or asking them to mute because of background noise). In person, you can read cues and body language and if you know me, you’ll know I love a group TikTok moment too!
But meetings aren’t the only thing. Franchise network events, franchising sector gatherings, and industry-specific conferences are brilliant as well. There’s lots to choose from and, while travel, accommodation, and refreshments can all add up, the value of connecting, networking, and hearing from inspiring guest speakers creates an atmosphere you just can’t get online. Chatting over coffee or lunch, or continuing the conversation after over a drink builds genuine working relationships. You get to know people on a level of trust and care, and we all know relationships in business go a long way.
I wouldn’t say it’s all about face to face though. As mentioned above, being able to access meetings you might not otherwise fit into your schedule if you had to travel is fantastic. I urge you to find a balance between the two. Online discovery days can attract many people, monthly webinars and virtual meet-ups can provide valuable support to your network, and catching up quickly to chat through an idea or collaboration is perfect on Zoom. But do try to fit in those face to face events as well they won’t disappoint.
So, get booking an in-person event soon there are plenty coming up!
The BFA Conference will probably be the next big one when this comes out, so check the franchising calendar.
After writing this, I’m planning my travel to Ignite, the Children’s Activities Association Conference booking my ticket to the What’s On 4 Kids Annual Awards, and the BFA Conference. I hope I’ll see lots of you at one or more of them!
