The UK franchise community reached a significant milestone on World Franchise Day 2026, with a digital campaign that reached an audience of 1.75 million. The British Franchise Association (BFA) led the effort, creating bespoke digital collateral and encouraging members to share their experiences on social media. This year marked a shift from a week-long physical campaign to a fully digital approach.
The World Franchise Council
Last month, franchise communities across the world celebrated World Franchise Day. The event was only founded in 2025, so it is still in its infancy, but it is already becoming an important date in franchise association calendars across the globe.
World Franchise Day was created in 2025 by the World Franchise Council (WFC) and is celebrated annually on the second Wednesday in June.
World Franchise Council members
There are currently 46 members of the World Franchise Council: Argentina, Asia Pacific (regional), El Salvador, Taiwan, Belgium, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, Venezuela, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Europe (regional), Ibero-America (regional), France, Finland, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Singapore, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Indonesia, the United States, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, National Franchise Centre Costa Rica, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey.
Differing agendas
Some countries chose to make major announcements on the day, while others hosted social or charitable events. Many used the opportunity to release figures highlighting the size and success of their national franchise sectors.
Canada
Canada announced that franchising remains the country’s 12th largest industry and contributed $143 billion to GDP in 2025, ahead of an earlier prediction of $133 billion. The government estimates that this contribution will rise to almost $150 billion in 2026, while supporting employment for nearly two million Canadians.
The USA
Under the banner of the International Franchise Association (IFA), the USA used the day to introduce a congressional resolution recognising World Franchise Day. The association’s president and CEO, Matt Haller, used the platform to argue against proposed legislation that the IFA says would centralise employment liability for franchisors.
South Africa
South Africa used World Franchise Day to launch a major membership overhaul. The association announced a framework of seven new membership benefits, moving beyond its traditional representative role to provide increased support for both franchisors and franchisees.
France
France began its campaign with a charity run in Paris, raising funds for Access Mobility Europe, a charity specialising in mobility for people with disabilities. The day concluded with a drinks reception, known as Verre de la Franchise, at the Paris office, providing an opportunity for franchisors, franchisees, partners and industry figures to network.
The UK
In 2026, the BFA moved away from its previous week-long physical campaign to a fully digital approach, reaching an audience of 1.75 million. The UK franchise sector contributes £19.1 billion to the UK economy and has maintained a commercial failure rate of less than 6% for more than two decades.
The BFA created bespoke digital collateral for members to use alongside the hashtag #WorldFranchiseDay, resulting in 402 unique posts across social media platforms.

Video content
The BFA also harnessed the power of video, asking members to answer the question: “What does franchising mean to you?” on film.
Caroline Gowing, from virtual PA service Pink Spaghetti, who was elected to the BFA board at the end of 2025, said: “To me, franchising is access to a community of like-minded professionals who share knowledge, support and opportunity.”
The digital shift demonstrated that a coordinated online strategy can amplify reach, generate measurable engagement and reinforce the sector’s contribution to the national economy. The success of the UK campaign provides a template for other markets seeking to modernise their franchise outreach in the post-pandemic era.
