One of the biggest misconceptions about franchising is that every successful business follows the exact same blueprint. In reality, the strongest franchise networks create opportunities for people with different ambitions, backgrounds and growth strategies.
At Greensleeves Lawn Care, two franchise locations are demonstrating exactly that. Dan and Holly Scott at Greensleeves Newmarket are preparing to acquire their second territory little more than a year after joining the network, while David Fortune at Greensleeves Enfield has spent the past fourteen years steadily building a thriving business from an entirely new territory.
Their businesses may look very different today but both highlight an important strength of the Greensleeves franchise model: it gives franchisees the flexibility to grow in the way that best suits their goals.
For Dan and Holly, franchising was about creating a future they could build together. After successful careers in publishing and graphic design, they decided they wanted to invest in their own business rather than continue climbing the corporate ladder. Following extensive research, they chose Greensleeves and deliberately purchased an established territory, allowing them to begin with an existing customer base and recurring revenue.
“We looked at a number of different franchises before deciding on Greensleeves,” said Dan. “Buying an existing territory gave us a meaningful customer base from day one. That recurring income and established cash flow meant we could focus on growing the business rather than spending several years building it from scratch.”
The couple quickly established complementary roles within the business. Dan focused on operations, learning every aspect of service delivery before introducing improvements to customer service and best practice. Holly took responsibility for administration, customer communication and office management while bringing her organisational and creative experience into the business.
The results have exceeded their expectations. Over the past four months, turnover has increased by thirty percent year on year, revenue per customer has grown through a greater focus on service packages and improved recurring income, and the couple have already agreed the acquisition of a neighbouring territory covering Huntingdon and Kettering.
“We have both worked for large corporate organisations for most of our careers,” said Holly. “Now we feel like we are building something for our own future. That is incredibly important to us and it is exciting to see what we can achieve together.”
David Fortune’s experience demonstrates a different route to growth. After almost forty years in senior operational roles within major retail businesses, he joined Greensleeves by taking on a completely new territory, building his customer base one lawn at a time.
In the early years, he balanced treating customers’ lawns during the day with administration and planning in the evenings, gradually reaching the point where growing demand meant investing in a team. Today, David leads an established business supported by experienced colleagues, allowing him to concentrate on strategy, customer relationships and future growth rather than carrying out treatments himself.
“Like any business, there have been challenges along the way,” said David. “But every stage teaches you something. Building the team has been one of the biggest changes because it allows me to concentrate on growing the business rather than trying to do everything myself. Even though I have had my business for fourteen years, I am still looking ahead and investing for the future.”
Although their journeys have taken different paths, both franchisees point to the ongoing support provided by Greensleeves as an important factor in their continued success. From structured training and business development guidance to collaboration with fellow franchisees, the network continues to support owners throughout every stage of their development.
“One of the things I enjoy most about working with our franchisees is seeing how different every journey can be. Dan and Holly embraced the model from day one and have already expanded into a second territory in little over a year. David’s experience shows the value of long-term commitment, resilience and continually adapting a business as it grows,” said Cheryl Harper, managing director of Greensleeves Lawn Care.
