Launching your own franchise can give you freedom from the constraints of the corporate world and the opportunity to build something for yourself. It comes with its own risks, but having the courage to take that leap and backing yourself 100% is the best way to set your franchise up for success.
When you buy a franchise, you buy a framework, a proven and tested business model. Someone else has set everything up, learnt from their journey, and put together the resources you need to run a successful business. But as a franchisee, you are still in charge and the most critical asset for your business. No one will launch your business for you, bring customers to your door, or get the tills ringing. You are the one who determines what the future holds. Whether your franchise succeeds or fails is down to you.
That responsibility can feel like a weight on your shoulders. Starting and running your own business isn’t for everyone. It involves taking risks, making decisions, and being brave enough to try something new. But for some people, that responsibility can feel like a weight lifted off their shoulders, as they are finally empowered to make their own decisions and shape their own future.
Whether you are starting an outsourcing agency, a doughnut shop, an oven-cleaning business, or a baby-swimming franchise, the same age-old rule applies: people buy from people. Particularly for service-based franchises, this matters even more. If you don’t believe that your franchise will be a success, how will anyone else?
Now is the time to be bold, brave and courageous. It won’t all be plain sailing – nothing worthwhile ever is. As Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” Being courageous is about accepting that you won’t get everything right the first time, but valuing making mistakes as an essential part of the process and an opportunity to learn, develop and grow.
In need of a confidence boost? Try these three steps:
Start the day with a positive mindset
This could be reading a positive affirmation, like “I am capable,” or writing down one thing you are grateful for. Personally, I am a huge fan of Mel Robbins and her quotes, such as “You can’t control how you feel. But you can always choose how you act.” This really grounds me and sets me up for the day ahead with a resilient, can-do attitude.
Set realistic goals and expectations
Courage isn’t about saving the world – it’s about showing up as your best self every day. By setting smaller, more achievable objectives, you can build your confidence one step at a time. Try to end your day, week or month with a reflection. What went well that you are proud of? It’s easy to overlook the little wins, but making time to focus on what you have achieved (not what you haven’t) can really change how you feel about the future.
Find your tribe
Running your own business can be lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. Particularly when starting a new business, having the right support is critical. Make the most of your franchise network and reach out to local business networks for support. Visit several networking groups to find the meeting style that work for you.
Networking meetings can have real impact by bringing people together, creating connections, sparking conversations and developing relationships. I strongly believe that when women gather with intention, courage becomes contagious. I am always inspired by the energy in the room when I am out networking and reminded of the power of community. No franchisee should be an island; we can all benefit from connecting and collaborating with others.
Make 2026 your year to shine by focusing on yourself. Find the courage to boost your confidence, make yourself visible, and be unapologetically YOU. You are your best asset, and it’s up to you how much of a success your franchise becomes this year. Now is the time to be brave and get started!
