Whilst being prepared is always a good thing, sometimes it can be difficult for company owners to know how to do this and to understand its value.. Franchise owners often ask me ‘how far can we plan ahead before it becomes too far?’
In my mind, knowing your plans for the next 5, 3 and 1 years is vital. You need to know where you are headed and map out how you will get there.
The advantages of planning
There are several important advantages to planning. Having clarity in your business vision will give you confidence as it provides you with clarity and helps your decision making. Not only will you have a structure for yourself and your staff to work from, it will help you in the recruitment process and if you are looking for funding.
Start big and work back
Start with your long term plans then divide it down into quarterly, monthly and weekly goals. Then plan for your most common setbacks and challenges. Imagine what could happen to set your business back, then make a plan for each scenario. This is another way of providing the business owner with confidence and clarity.
Set time aside to look at your goals and work towards them each week. Regular and consistent work on your business is the only way to guarantee growth and success.
Ask for help
Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone more experienced to check through your goals and help you plan. Business owners often don’t reach high enough and having a mentor or coach can help you aim higher and give you the assurance to go for more.
Long-term planning can help you to see any changes that might need to be made and it can be useful in helping you to reassess your business. By regularly referring to your business plan, you can remind yourself of what you are aiming for.
If you haven’t already mapped ahead for 2022 and 2023 I recommend that you do. Every year rolls around so quickly, especially after the pandemic saw so much of our time stripped away from us.
