The good news? Every mistake below is avoidable if you know what to watch out for. Here’s how to steer clear of the biggest pitfalls and fast-track your success.
1. Ignoring the proven system
If you’ve invested in a franchise with a model that already works, why waste time reinventing the wheel? Our travel franchisees who do this tend to be successful in their first year, earn a profit and get their franchise fee back! Stick to the playbook, follow the formula, and then add your personal magic once you’re confident. Success is rarely about starting from scratch – it’s about sharpening what’s already proven.
2. Avoiding calls
Working from home? Clients don’t buy from faceless emails. They buy from people they know, like, and trust. Some of our most successful franchisees don’t have a big following on social, but they still make a massive impact in person. Why? Because every conversation, whether it’s a call, a coffee, or a quick chat, is a chance to build a real connection. Don’t just send another email. Pick up the phone. Reach out. Turn interest into relationships – and relationships into bookings.
3. Wasting time
Endless social posts with zero engagement? Entertaining “bargain hunters” who never buy? Both are business black holes. Guard your time fiercely. Focus your energy where it counts – on people who see your value and are ready to invest. If you lose a sale, learn from any mistakes but put it behind you and focus on the future.
4. Investment in existing clients
New clients are grand, but the real gold’s in the ones you’ve already got. Look after them properly and they’ll keep coming back – and better still, they’ll send their mates your way. Loyalty will always beat running around after strangers. But don’t be shy about asking for those referrals. We’ve recently launched a scheme where people can benefit from referrals. We expect this will skyrocket sales.
5. Ignoring support systems (or Not Asking for Help)
One of the biggest perks of joining a franchise? You’re never alone. Every franchisee at The Travel Franchise has a dedicated Business Development Manager (BDM) – your secret weapon for advice, accountability, and strategy. My advice? Speak to them weekly. No BDM? Then plug into networking groups or associations. A good franchise will ensure there are opportunities to meet other franchisees. We go one step further and take large groups away on overseas mentorship retreats! Success thrives on connection.
6. Undervaluing yourself
Discounting might bag you a customer today, but it’ll bite you on the backside tomorrow. Cheap clients are like cheap pints – they give you a headache and don’t stick around. Charge your worth. If you don’t value yourself, why should anyone else? Be brave, stick to your price, and remember: if someone wants “cheap,” tell them there’s a budget airline with their name on it.
7. Skipping learning
Standing still’s just another way of saying you’re going backwards. If you’re not topping up your knowledge each week – training, webinars, or pinching tips off someone who’s smashing it – you’ll end up stuck while everyone else zooms past. We put on live webinars and record them, so unless your internet’s powered by hamsters, you’ve got no excuse. The best franchisees? They’re the ones who never stop learning – because in business, the minute you think you know it all, you’re done for.
8. Neglecting what’s on your doorstep
Don’t make the mistake of hiding online when opportunity is all around you. Join local groups, attend events, talk to everyone about what you do. At the same time, lean on your fellow franchisees – collaboration is a growth accelerator. And competition can make you a better athlete.
9. Not knowing your numbers
After six months, you should know exactly where your sales come from, which marketing works, and what margins you’re making. Without these numbers, you’re flying blind. Data isn’t boring – it’s your roadmap to smarter, faster growth.
10. Losing momentum
Everyone has ups and downs, but even failure is a lesson. Stay motivated and remember why you launched your business. Passion is contagious. If you’re not excited about what you sell, why would anyone else be? Fall in love with your business, show up with energy, and your clients will feel it too.
