The benefits of investing in a management franchise

When you begin your franchising journey, one of the first decisions you’re going to make is the type of model you wish to invest in. Owner-operator, product distribution, quick service food or management-style business; it’s one of the defining characteristics of a franchise that will determine what your role is as a franchisee. Chris Wootton, Managing Director of domestic cleaning franchise Poppies, offers his thoughts on the benefits of investing in a management-style business and why he believes it’s the direct route for success.

“Since I launched my Poppies office in 1996, I’ve seen several life cycles of franchisees during that time. I’ve also been able to reap the rewards of a management franchise myself, a valuable experience that I now take into my role as a franchisor. Management models offer relatively unlimited growth potential and allow you to visualise what is in store for the future of the business, which is crucial when starting your journey. The ability to have an idea of the business’ potential is advantageous for any prospect.”

Here are Chris’ three reasons why a management franchise is a great opportunity:

No experience necessary

Perhaps the greatest advantage is how there is no need for any prior knowledge within a particular industry or sector to be successful. You’ll be responsible for managing the team – hence the name – who are the ones in charge of delivering the service. For that reason, a key attribute that a franchisor will look for is leadership, while the franchise system will provide you with the business know-how to aid both your recruitment and training processes.

For example, contrary to popular belief, Poppies franchisees don’t need to have any experience in the cleaning industry to be successful. Instead, they need to demonstrate passion, drive and determination to lead a team. The existing network consists of a diverse group of individuals who come from all walks of life – including bank managers, IT specialists, public sector managers and a hot-air balloon pilot.

The possibilities are endless

Another attractive quality of a management model is the opportunity for scalable growth. When you’re not the one delivering the service, you will never become a blockage as the business gets bigger. Your role is to make sure that the quality of service is being upheld, and that you have talented individuals within your team to help take things to the next level. But don’t think that this has to be done on your own, as you’ll have the franchisor’s experience and expertise to tap into when making the next step for your business. They’ll give you the tools and advice to ensure you understand every element before reaching for the stars.

Personal benefits

It’s not just your professional life that is impacted; your personal life will be too. When you’ve built a reputable business that allows you to spend less time in the day-to-day operations, you can take a well-earned step back to enjoy the fruits of your labour. With the right team in place, you can rest assured that your business is still operating to a great standard, even when you’re not there. If you enjoy spending time with your family or wish to dedicate precious hours to your favourite pastime, then a management franchise is perfect for offering that level of flexibility.

“When franchisees are looking at what franchise model they wish to invest in, there are several other key factors, but understanding the style that is best suited to you is the first consideration. Of course, there are many benefits to each and every style of franchise, but, following my experience as both franchisee and franchisor, I’m confident that a management model is a great route to success.

“I think the key thing for prospects to bear in mind is what they are wanting to achieve with their business. Do you thrive when leading a team? Do you want a better work-life balance? Do you wish to build an empire? If the answers to the above are yes, then a management franchise is the opportunity to accomplish all of your goals.”
