Networking has always been an integral part of business. Whether it’s through family, friends, or casual acquaintances, opportunities to “do business” often arise from the connections we make. People naturally prefer doing business with those they know and trust, which is why building a strong network is essential in any industry.
November proved to be a prime example of the power of networking in the franchise world. The British Franchise Association’s Annual Conference and Awards provided a massive platform for both franchisors and franchisees to shine. It was an opportunity to celebrate achievements, build relationships, and create new connections. For some, it was a chance to take home prestigious awards; for others, even being a finalist was a win. But what always strikes me is how many businesses hesitate to even enter their franchise for consideration. It’s a missed opportunity to gain visibility and make valuable connections.
I often hear people say they don’t enjoy networking, but I think that’s often because they miss the bigger picture. Networking doesn’t always have to mean attending formal events or joining groups. Sometimes, it’s as simple as striking up a conversation with someone sitting next to you at an awards dinner or taking a few minutes to ask about their business. These seemingly small interactions can lead to lasting connections.
In fact, I’d bet that most small businesses include networking as a key part of their marketing strategy—whether through formal groups like BNI, attending local forums, or socializing in business circles. Networking doesn’t have to be a chore. It’s an essential part of building your business, and avoiding it is simply not an option.
Two standout events this month further emphasized the importance of networking in the franchise industry. HSBC Bank hosted two exclusive events: “Meet the Brands” for multi-unit franchisee clients and “Build Your Brand” for franchisors. Both offered valuable opportunities to engage with the right people in a more intimate setting. It was a chance to learn, share, and stay in tune with the latest trends in franchising.
The message is simple: if you want to succeed, you need to show up. Whether you’re a prospective franchisee, an experienced franchisor, or just starting out, attending these events and participating in industry initiatives will keep you at the forefront of the business. The franchise industry is full of opportunities to connect, learn, and grow, so take full advantage of everything it has to offer.
