As a franchisor it’s a fine balance ensuring we are constantly supporting our networks with knowledge and learning; yet not overloading everyone with too much information.

Every network and individual is different and people learn in different ways – written, visual, audio, face to face, group, 121 etc. It can be very overwhelming trying to present topics in the most engaging formats.

Variety is key, you all obviously have a written operations manual; but are there links in it to videos or visual content as well? If not, consider recording some. In my previous article I discussed how video is key for marketing because consumer habits are such that video is the best way to engage with people. This is the same for networks too. Consider links to video or audio options of the content that is written. Options of breaking down the manual into bitesize chunks is good too; make sections clear and precise so visually they don’t look too overwhelming when viewed.

Other options to consider:

  • 121 calls OR zoom calls, some people will prefer a quick chat on the phone, others will prefer seeing you over the screen
  • Face to face visits, having a coffee in a relaxed environment or in their environment can encourage honesty and transparency too
  • Having guest speakers on video or at regular meetings ensures people will engage with different people. But make sure to try and mix up content so it isn’t the same person presenting every time
  • Monthly meetings on zoom. As well as presentations from the team or guests think about different formats, breakout rooms for more personal discussions, interactive workshops, fun quizzes etc
  • Finally, when it comes to the annual conference decide how much information you want your network to absorb. These can be very heavy information overloads for many, so if you haven’t covered topics monthly, try and make these sessions on 1 day as interactive as possible. Team building and physical workshops can be great for information to be retained. A quiz, games and awards are great at your annual conference too

Don’t worry about getting everything spot on, we are always learning ourselves too, so feedback from your network is key. We will never please everyone all of the time but if the majority say similar things then you know you can tweak those things to engage them in the best way. There are experts you can engage to help too with your ops manual, training and guest speaking. Never think you have to figure this out alone, bring in the talent to help!
