People are praising Margot Robbie for her “on-theme” dressing at her Wuthering Heights premieres.
She did this brilliantly for Barbie as well, and we also saw how Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande embraced it for premieres and interviews for both Wicked movies. So, should we all be dressing for our brand?
I would say yes, because I do it all the time.
I’m not talking about turning up in a teaching uniform or a branded hoodie, especially when it’s an awards evening or a smart conference. However, I am pretty well known for always wearing a pale blue trouser suit (yes, I really do have more than one, for those who ask) to franchising and children’s activity conferences and meetings. I even try to wear blue for evening functions.
I happen to love pale blue, but a few years ago I made a conscious decision to dress in my brand colours at every event I attended. The idea wasn’t just to represent the brand subconsciously, but also to build recognition of both myself and diddi dance with others. As a bonus, it makes getting dressed much easier, no overthinking required.
Here’s a funny story. After a few events EWIF, the BFA conference, and the CAA conference I attended the EWIF Awards. The guest speaker, and good friend, Claire O’Connor, delivered a presentation featuring various photos from across the industry. I appeared in a few of them, and in every single photo I was wearing the same blue suit. This raised a few giggles, followed by some great banter from people coming up to me afterwards (thanks, Pip).
That’s when I realised the brand dressing was working. My limited wardrobe had become a conversation starter, and people definitely recognised me at the next event.
So, could your outfit choices be a marketing decision? Can dressing on theme or on brand help your business?
With so many photos taken, videos captured, and social media reels and TikToks created now, it’s worth representing your brand colours wherever you can. These subtle, subconscious moments of brand visibility help people recognise you without the hard sell or awkward re-introductions.
Am I alone, or can you relate?
I do hope I’ll be seeing everyone in brand-coloured evening gowns and tailored suits at the EF100 National Celebratory & Awards evening on the 12th March.😉
