One of the many reasons why individuals choose to invest in a franchise is the appeal of a better work-life balance, allowing them to spend more time with family and loved ones. But what happens when you take this concept to the next level by combining family and business?
Here, Will Frankling, Co-founder of Kitchen Makeovers, hears from Colin and Michelle Blackburn, dynamic husband-and-wife duo and the co-owners of Kitchen Makeovers Cambridge. They explore the unique challenges and rewards of managing a business as a couple.
In the almost seven years since Kitchen Makeovers launched, we’ve welcomed franchisees from all walks of life into our growing network. Some join us as lone rangers, whilst others choose to invest with the support of a business partner. Investing in a franchise with the support of a spouse is a common occurrence in franchising – and that’s for good reason. More often than not, couples in franchising enjoy tremendous success, with a shared passion and goal unifying their motivations. Colin and Michelle completely personify that. Here’s their story.
“I launched Kitchen Makeovers Cambridge in August 2023, with Michelle officially joining me in the business full-time last year – though she had always been a key part behind the scenes,” explained Colin. “Although it may seem like a challenge to some, Michelle’s transition into her role was seamless, thanks to our 25 years of experience working and running businesses together,” said Colin. “None of our past ventures have matched the effortless success of our Kitchen Makeovers franchise, with sales soaring since Michelle joined! Her exceptional communication skills, honed by her experience as a psychiatric nurse and business owner, perfectly complement my straightforward, no-nonsense approach from years in the army. Combined with our shared work ethic, this has been the perfect recipe for our business success.
“While I’m out handling the physical jobs, Michelle manages admin, leads and bookings from our home office. Over the years, we’ve defined clear roles, which has been a game-changer for both efficiency and harmony. We’ve also learned to step away from work and enjoy time together without always talking business – our shared experiences mean we instinctively understand each other’s day. Even our sons pitch in when they can, bringing us closer as a family. It’s a unique privilege to build something together and see the rewards benefit those we love most.”
For Colin, the best thing about working with his partner is the unwavering support he receives every step of the way. Being on the same page with shared goals and targets makes a huge difference because they both want their business to thrive for the same reason: to provide a great future for their family.
“Running our Kitchen Makeovers franchise has truly transformed our lives, giving us the freedom to enjoy what matters most,” explained Colin. “I get to pursue my passion for sports by coaching our son’s football team and boxing, while Michelle recharges with daily dog walks with her friend. While some calls may spill into evenings and weekends, the flexibility of working from our home office allows us to shape work around our lifestyle. This balance has even let us treat ourselves – a new kitchen at Christmas and a trip to the Maldives to celebrate Michelle’s 50th later this year. It’s the rewards of the life we’ve built! With endless potential ahead, we plan to continue this journey until retirement.”
Words of advice
“For couples considering a business venture together, keep your roles clear – know who’s responsible for what to avoid confusion. Don’t both tackle the same tasks, and set aside time for an official meeting every week. From our experience, this approach has been nothing but positive. By fostering open communication and respecting each other’s roles, you can build not only a successful business but also a stronger partnership,” shared Michelle.
Supporting couples like Colin and Michelle in building a business together is one of the most rewarding aspects of what we do. It’s incredible to see how combining their unique skills and shared vision not only drives their success but also strengthens their family bonds. Helping franchisees create a life that works for them and their loved ones is exactly why we do what we do at Kitchen Makeovers.
