Don’t get schooled by regulations

Let’s be honest – no one gets excited about regulations. But in any industry, knowing the rules and keeping up with changes isn’t optional

Don’t get schooled by regulations

It’s what keeps your business running smoothly and your reputation intact. Whether it’s safeguarding, data protection or local policy updates, staying ahead of the game can feel like a full-time job. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Here, Frank Milner, president of global tutoring franchise, Tutor Doctor, shares his top tips on how franchisees can stay one step ahead of the rules and regulations they face in their respective industries – especially, in Tutor Doctor’s case, education. Because when it comes to regulation, being prepared is essential.

Let’s flip the mindset – regulations aren’t there to slow you down, they’re there to protect everyone involved; in our case, students, staff and our franchisees. Taking them seriously shows you mean business.

Knowing the rules inside out gives you the confidence to make smart, strategic choices – not just to stay compliant, but to run a stronger, more trusted business. And here’s the real win: when parents or customers see that you take compliance seriously, they’ll feel reassured and more likely to choose you over the competition.

Keeping up with the latest changes doesn’t need to be a scramble. Make sure you’ve subscribed to updates from key industry bodies and regulators – a quick skim of their newsletter or website is often all that’s needed to keep you ahead of the curve.

Pay attention to local rules too. If you’re working closely with schools, for example, having a good relationship with someone at the local education authority can be invaluable.

Also, getting involved in franchise networks or forums is a great way to stay in the know. Talking to others in the same boat is one of the quickest ways to pick up on important changes or best practices.

This leads on nicely to my next point – you’re not in this alone – your franchisor should have your back. Make full use of the resources they provide, whether it’s compliance templates, step-by-step frameworks or policy guides.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions – and don’t wait until something’s gone wrong to speak up. Checking in early can save a lot of hassle later on. Also, jump into any training or webinars your franchisor offers. These sessions are goldmines of information and can really help in ensuring you’re up to date and getting practical advice.

It’s not just about what you know – your team needs to be clued up too. Regular training sessions (especially around safeguarding, data protection and health & safety for us at Tutor Doctor) should be part of your operations.

Foster a culture where everyone knows their responsibilities and takes them seriously. That kind of accountability can make all the difference. And don’t forget to review your policies regularly – what was right six months ago might be outdated now.

Finally, don’t leave things until you get the heads-up that someone’s coming to check out your operations. Keep your documentation and processes up to date and well organised all the time.

Run internal audits or mock inspections every so often – they’re great for spotting any gaps before they become problems. A compliance calendar is also a good tool – regular reminders for reviews and updates can take the pressure off and keep you on track year-round.

Taking a proactive approach to regulation is so much more than just ticking boxes – it’s smart business. It gives you a competitive edge and builds trust with everyone you work with – especially your customers!

Franchisees who stay informed and compliant are the ones that thrive. So, stay curious, keep asking questions and make the most of the support around you – because when it comes to regulations, what you know really does matter.
