Back to School?

The season has just officially flipped into autumn. The children are heading to school – some for the first time and some for their last year. September has always felt like a time to restart – almost as compulsively as the New Year in January.

The fundamental difference between this time of year and the New Year resolutions is that August typically brings a break from work that isn’t manically filled with eating and presents. This year, of course, a change of government has seen a further shift in thinking and the opportunities it may bring.

It’s noticeable in franchising that there are more ‘I want to change my life’ applicants than we usually see in January. We’re approaching a time when the British Franchise Association’s flagship exhibition is taking place in Birmingham (at the NEC in October), and people are contemplating a change.

Starting now on a search for a franchise means, for most, that they could be starting a new business in the new year – and September does feel like a launch pad for time to review and refresh.

Whilst examining the reasons for unease at returning to work is essential, many will conclude that they don’t love what they do. They feel unfulfilled. Maybe the right choice is to own a business, do something for themselves, build a legacy, change direction, or grow in the industry they love.

There are numerous opportunities to read about how to buy a franchise and be a great franchisee, and the seminars engage people at the exhibition, too. The move into franchising is definitely not for everyone; a bit like school! But for many, it offers a way to invigorate, renew and build a business to be proud of.

So, whether you’ve just sent your children to school for the first time and want to start building something with your ‘free’ time, your kids have left to start University, or you’re just feeling that season of change; now it’s time for you to work on yourself, and it feels like the time is right to explore whether this is the right opportunity for you to consider moving into franchise ownership.
