New year, new career?

For those seeking to switch careers during 2024, Sarah Cressall offers 10 tips to help you on your journey.

New year, new career?

Time is our most precious resource. And it makes complete sense to review how you are spending your time. Are you using your allotted time in the best possible way? Are your daily activities and chores serving you and your loved ones as well as they can?

You may feel you are at a crossroads in your career. And it’s always a good ploy to regularly explore what other options are available. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to pursue a career aligned with my values and passion.

I’ve also been privileged in helping other people to take control of their future and to achieve their own successes and fulfilment. Here are 10 considerations for those who are keen to embark on a career change during 2024.

1 – Soul-Searching: Take a moment to reflect on your life’s journey. What makes you smile and feel good? What are you truly passionate about? A career should resonate with who you are and be aligned with your values.

2 – Setting Clear Intentions: Define your goals with utmost clarity. Your path may not always be linear, but having a destination in mind will help you when making decisions.

3 – Exploration: The world is vast, with so many opportunities to ponder. So how do you work out what’s best for you? Research a selection of industries, roles and companies. Attend events, workshops and connect with professionals in your field of interest.  Knowledge is power. At the very start, you may not even be aware what it is you are looking for. Identifying what you don’t want is also vital. This will help you get closer to making the correct choice.

4 – Leveraging Past Experiences: Don’t discount your past experiences. Skills are often transferable across industries. Create a list of how your previous roles will equip you when searching for your new endeavour. If you are considering running your own business, it is worth researching a franchise. The best franchises will provide you with comprehensive training and on-going support. This will fill the gaps in your skillset and expertise.

5 – Continuous Learning: Education and training may be necessary. Embrace the chance to expand your knowledge and skills. Lifelong learning is a vital aspect of personal growth.

6 – Networking: Building a network in your chosen field is invaluable. Connect with like-minded individuals, seek mentorship, and let your network open doors for you.

7 – Crafting Your Story: Your resume and cover letter should explain your unique story. Highlight the relevant experiences and describe how they will shape your future journey.

8 – Financial Preparedness: Understand the financial implications of your career change. It may require a temporary financial adjustment. Create a budget and make suitable and sensible plans.

9 – Balance and Well-Being: Consider the work-life balance offered in your chosen new career. A harmonious life outside of work is essential for long-term fulfilment.

10 – Courage and Resilience: Changing careers can be daunting. However, it’s also an opportunity for growth. Be willing to take calculated risks and persevere through difficult challenges.

Conclusion: Your journey may have twists and turns but, remember, it’s all part of the adventure. At The Creation Station, creativity, community and personal growth are at the heart of everything we do. And your career change should also and always be driven by your values and aspirations.

Embrace the unknown and take one step at a time. Believe in your potential. With determination and perseverance, you can find a career that not only fulfils your needs but also makes a meaningful impact in the world.

The Creation Station was borne out of a passion for creativity, and this has enriched my life beyond measure. I hope that your career change will lead you to a place where you can thrive and find deep fulfilment. And I hope you truly benefit on your journey of self-discovery and transformation.
