We’d all like to be considered the best in the world at something. But whilst for most of us this is little more than a pipe dream, Papa John’s can now say it is a truly record-breaking pizza franchise. Not content with being the world’s third largest pizza delivery chain, it marked the opening of its 300th UK store in Wimbledon by setting a new Guinness World Record for the most people simultaneously tossing pizza dough.
Descending on Potters Field Park, near London’s Tower Bridge, 338 Papa John’s employees came together to fling about some water and flour in a bid to break the Guinness World Record. Led by John Schnatter, founder and CEO of Papa John’s, the pizza pros smashed the previous record held by Istituto Nazionale della Pizza, which saw 278 people pitching pizza bases in Naples, Italy.
For the attempt to be a true record breaker, it had to take place in one location, participants needed to toss their dough for at least a minute and, by the end, have a base of at least 30.5cm in diameter. As it turned out, the Papa John’s team had no difficulties in setting a brand new world record. “It was a fantastic effort and achievement by everyone involved. I congratulate them all on their Guinness World Records success!” said Justine Tommey, the Guinness World Records adjudicator who was responsible for overseeing the event.
Schnatter added: “Today has been a fantastic way to showcase the passion we have at Papa John’s for pizza and to demonstrate how much skill goes into making pizzas. I am delighted that we have broken the record today – a great way to begin our 300th store opening celebrations in Wimbledon.”
It’s safe to say Papa John’s employees really earned their crust with this day’s work.”
