Din Tai Fung, the dim sum franchise, has gone from strength to strength in the five decades since launching its chain of dumpling eateries. Not only has it set up 135 restaurants in 13 countries, but it’s also collected an impressive collection of accolades along the way, including a Michelin star for one of its Hong Kong restaurants. And now that the company has announced plans to open its first UK restaurant it looks like Brits can soon find out first-hand what the fuss is all about.
BreadTalk Group, the food company, has acquired the rights to open Din Tai Fung’s first British franchise in London in 2017. And the company’s experience setting up 24 Din Tai Fung restaurants over the past decade should help as it enters the competitive London food scene. “With our experience in operating the brand for the last 13 years in both Singapore and Thailand, we hope to bring the much loved Din Tai Fung to new consumers who will appreciate this authentic Taiwanese cuisine,” said, William Cheng, CEO of the restaurant division at BreadTalk Group.
The foray into the European market will be the latest in a string of expansions that’s already seen Din Tai Fung serve up dumplings in Hong Kong, Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, the US, Singapore and Thailand.
Given the success of the restaurant, Din Tai Fung’s dumplings will hardly be found wonton on these shores.
