One year on

As we reach this final diary entry, it is remarkable to reflect on how quickly the first year has passed since Ian Furlong and Louise Sergent acquired Signs Express Liverpool & Wirral

One year on

Taking on an established resale with clear potential for growth, they have evolved the centre into a progressive, future-focused operation equipped with the latest technology to support both the team and their ambitions. Catching up with Ian for his last diary entry, we hear how the business is doing…

“Twelve months on, the business is in a fantastic position, something I’m incredibly proud of, but it couldn’t have been done without Lou, our Centre Manager David, and my incredible team around me. Year one was always going to be about laying solid foundations: bringing the centre up to date, investing in new kit, strengthening the team and creating a welcoming, productive environment. I’m pleased to say we’ve achieved exactly that.

It’s been a steep learning curve at times, but one we’ve fully embraced. I’ve always believed in building strong relationships, and that approach has helped us attract new and exciting customers while deepening connections with existing ones. Just as importantly, I’m passionate about bringing the team along on the journey and ensuring we play a positive role in our local community.

Our investment in new flatbed printers has already opened doors. The ability to print large-scale, one-piece bespoke wallpaper and print direct to substrates has been a real differentiator. In February alone, we welcomed several new clients who were impressed by the scale and quality we can now produce in-house.

Projects have ranged from eye-catching interior graphics for Kube Kitchens’ showroom, produced using Arlon SLX and printed with HP Latex inks, through to a busy run of vehicle graphics for companies including Wirral Flooring, Revival, GK9, DSO Building Services, Premier Auto Solutions, Fires and Stoves and Evoke.

We’ve also delivered standout exterior wayfinding and entrance graphics for Peoples Automotive Group, projects that showcase how impactful signage can completely transform a space.

Community involvement remains a huge priority. We’re heading to St Austin’s Primary School to install the custom wallpaper designed by the children during their visit to our centre, where they saw first-hand how signage is produced. We’re also looking forward to working again with Age UK Wirral to arrange another day out. Supporting the community is not an add-on for us, it’s part of who we are.

So, what does the future look like?

Growth, but smart, sustainable growth. We plan to expand the team, extend our reach across a wider area and continue investing in the latest equipment. Sustainability will remain firmly on the agenda, alongside strengthening relationships with both new and loyal clients. We’re proud to fly the flag for Signs Express across Liverpool and the Wirral, and to be part of a national network that offers genuine collaboration and support.

One of the biggest advantages of franchising with Signs Express is exactly that, the support.

Having a knowledgeable, experienced support team behind you makes a significant difference, especially in your first year. You’re in business for yourself, but never by yourself.

Is the signage industry a good investment? Simply put, yes.

Signage is everywhere. It’s essential to businesses of all sizes and across every sector. It’s creative, dynamic and varied and truly, no two days are ever the same. You meet incredible people and work on projects that genuinely make an impact.

My advice to anyone considering franchising? Do your homework. Make sure the industry aligns with your goals, ambitions and interests. And ensure you have the right franchise network behind you to guide and support you every step of the way.

For me, taking the leap into signage has been one of the best decisions I’ve made and I can’t wait to see where we can take the business.

If you’re thinking about it, go for it!”
